Well there was a week in Croatia where I started SO well with my food. Avoided the crap for a few days, and then it went downhill. As expected when you are eating with a group of people and you are getting bulk lunches and having drinks at night, maintaining healthy convenience food is not an easy task..
I went off the nutritional program for nearly two weeks, and in the first few days I got a huge rash up my back and legs, and then my feet and hands were insanely itchy. I put a great big bleeding scratch across my foot which made wearing jandels (or otherwise known as flip-flops) rather painful.
So now I am back in Sydney… and back to trying to get this sorted.
I went to see a Naturopath who mentioned the same things as the doctor – preservatives. Aka, the shitty food I have been consuming. She has given me some god awful stuff to drink before breakfast and lunch and JESUS how do people drink this stuff?? My GAWD. A mixture of plants and herbs. It’s not great. But you gotta do what you gotta do right..
And then on Saturday night, I had the craziest thing happen to me – on the way home from a night out with friends, a work mate convinced us to go via a takeaway joint and eat some sweat potato hot chips.. which were bloody amazing, let’s be honest. However, what happened a few hours later, was not something I ever expected. I woke up in the middle of the night with the craziest and sorest stomach I have ever experienced. I struggled to roll over to get up and wondered if I needed to call the ambulance. I struggled out of bed and went to the bathroom. I wasn’t sure if I was going to vom or what was going to happen.. I had the cold sweats and had to do foetal position beside the loo for a bit. As much as I would have loved to spend the night curled up beside the loo, I managed to crawl myself back to bed (grabbed a pot on the way in case there was an emergency in the night), and forced myself back to sleep. I woke up the next morning feeling lathargetic and still pretty sore in the gut.. was a weird experience. And that’s the second time I have had serious pains after hot deep friend food. I put a post-up on FB to see if anyone else has experienced this – and the most notable was a friend who messaged me about her case. She had a reaction to Sulphites which is in hot chips too.. so much so, she has severe asthma attacks – and now that I have googled it, is also quite common. So could this be sulphites?? They are in many things.. dried fruit, wines, most chips and sweets..
So now? Over the next 2 weeks I am going to start a proper cleanse. And actually stick to it. Not a bloody half arsed attempt. My naturopath has told me to incorporate my smoothies with particular foods (you know more veges, eggs, more fats, and drinking the god awful drink.. and drinking some nettle tea..because that could help with keep the inflamed skin down).
SO far the hardest thing I am finding – it literally avoiding preservatives. Like for example, this week at work we had ‘end of the week snacks’, so there is chip and dip, carrots, hummus etc.. so naturally I have been going for the hummus and carrots (slash it’s not all that easy at times let’s be completely honest here), and now that I am in a full habit of checking labels and looking for the words like preservatives and additives I decided to check the hummus. And WTF. It has preservatives. HUMMUS. I mean COME ON. I know they often put sugar with hummus which already makes me mad.. but preservatives, dam you people who make this food. So needless to say I saw that too late and had already had my fair share of the stuff..
SO I am looking for an accountability partner to do the cleanse with, someone to check in regularly and check I’m avoiding the preservatives, taking my supplements and not straying.. so if you want to be this person I would LOVE to hear from you!
